Shanling is no new name in the audiophile market. A big player for a very long time, it has been producing some really quality products ranging from DAP’s to some quality IEM’s and portable amplifiers. The new true-wireless earphones from the Chinese maker, MTW100, have caught the eyes and ears of the enthusiasts and have been talked about a lot lately. The earphones come in three different colors and have two different driver configurations – one is a balanced armature driver(BA), while the other one being a dynamic driver(DD) variant. In this article, I am going to talk about the DD version. Let us see what all features it has which makes it really worthy of all the praise.
Before we start, you can buy this amazing pair of TWS here at hifigo.com, we got this unit from hifigo.com in return for our unbiased review.
Design, Build Quality, Comfort, and Fit:-
The design is one of the most impressive aspects of the earphones. The case is beautifully designed with the Shanling logo on the front. It has a very nice shiny finish giving it a fine look. The compact size and lightweight of the case make it easy to slip in your pockets and walk around.
The glossy build of the earphones gives it a very fresh look. Unlike many true wireless earphones, it has a very small and unique shape. They fit really well in the ears. The stem is a bit longer than usual but that adds to a more relaxed stay when you put them on. The small shape also adds to better isolation as they easily insert well deep in the ears. Overall the build of the product is really decent and visually impressive, there is nothing to complain about.
Usability and Functionality:-
Shanling has packed good features in the earphones. The Bluetooth 5.0 gives a perfect solid connection, even in long-range, with no dropouts. For me, the connection never failed and was a seamless experience every time. The earphones come with automatic pairing feature which means MTW100 will automatically pair and connect to the device right after they are picked from the charging case.
Stereo and Mono Mode:-
The earphones can be used in two modes – stereo and mono. Mono mode where each earphone can be used independently, really comes handy when you are attending calls. You can take one of the earphones with mic and hold it near your mouth.
The earphones have a good battery life of 5-6 hours per single charge which is I guess is the industry standard nowadays. The charging case carries a battery life of nearly 20 hours giving you a full life of 25 hours, which is good enough.
The earphone’s plastic body is made to resist full water immersion. It comes with an IPX7 certification, which means you can literally take showers with them on but I don’t encourage doing that. The battery case, however, doesn’t have the same certification. So, it has to be definitely saved from water and wet conditions.
Shanling has done a very decent job in the sound department. The sound of MTW100(DD) is very well balanced with enough amount of bass present. Most of the TWS earphones I have tried are really bass-heavy making them uncomfortable for longer use. I am sure many will feel the bass is a bit unrefined for a dynamic driver (which promises powerful and more energetic sound) in MTW100, I myself feel the bass could have been better. I am not a bass lover so MTW100 gets a bonus point as I could really enjoy the bass light sound.
The soundstage is really better than a lot of TWS earphones I have tried. The earphones sound great across genre. I tried listening to rock, jazz and Bollywood songs – all equally enjoyable. Bass, mid-range, and treble are all presented very evenly, unlike many TWS earphones that put a heavy emphasis on bass and kill other frequencies, as I mentioned earlier. The sound quality is overall very impressive. Also, the really good fit of the earphones gives good isolation and adds to a better sound impression.
Some songs which I tried –
Yosi Horikawa: Bubbles
The Who: Baba O’ Riley
Sara K: Miles Away
Tingvall Trio: Vattensaga
Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble: Teufelsleiter
Radiohead (OK Computer): Exit Music (For a Film)
Funkadelic: Maggot Brain
Led Zeppelin: Since I’ve Been Loving You
There is no doubt about the fact that Shanling MTW100(DD) is a great TWS earphone. Everything about the earphones has been done very accurately. With very impressive and balanced sound quality, great connectivity, a premium look, and some good features, they are going to remain favorites for a very long time. The super-comfortable price range makes it very affordable to own one. The product punches above its weight in terms of both size and price. Well done, Shanling.
